This axis is a complex system of signals that allow the body to respond to a potential threat by producing stress hormones. This initial fight-or-flight response is characterised by increased levels of cortisol. Long term exposure to stress can lead to an excessive levels of cortisol, which may cause health issues, including more adrenal fatigue. The body's stress response system is comprised of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
